What Is an Armco Crash Barrier?

Armco is the go‑to corrugated steel safety barrier system you’ll see protecting car park perimeters, warehouse walls, machinery lines, fuel areas, loading docks and more. A run is built from corrugated steel beams fixed to steel posts (bolt‑down or cast‑in), joined with lap bolts, and finished with safety ends or corner sections where needed.

Why people use Armco: stops slow‑to‑moderate speed vehicle knocks becoming expensive wall repairs; protects people routes; creates traffic lanes; visually defines keep‑clear zones.

At‑a‑Glance Benefits

  • Heavy‑duty impact protection for vans, forklifts, cars, plant & site traffic.
  • Hot‑dip galvanised components resist rust outdoors & in washdown areas.
  • Modular system – cut, join, step & corner to fit awkward sites.
  • Bolt‑down or cast‑in posts to suit slab vs new pour.
  • Fishtail & pedestrian‑safe ends reduce snag / injury risk in public areas.
  • Custom lengths & paint options (safety yellow / corporate colours) available to order.

Got a layout already? Send beam run lengths + post centres and we’ll build the parts list for you.

Standard Armco Barrier Components

1. Beams / Rails

  • Total length: 3.5m
  • Effective length (post centres): 3.2m (allowing overlap at joints)
  • Profile height: ~310mm corrugated section
  • Gauge options: 2.7mm or 3.0mm nominal thickness (specify when quoting)
  • Finish: Hot‑dip galvanised to protect against corrosion
  • Optional powder coat: Safety yellow on request

2. Posts

Choose the post that fits your surface, loading & budget:

Z‑Section Bolt‑Down - Anchors to existing concreteLight/medium duty, internal warehouse runs, car parksQuick install; smaller footprint.

RSJ / I‑Beam Bolt‑Down - Anchors to existing concreteMedium/heavy duty, external sitesLarger steel section for higher impact; good where slab depth is known.

Z‑Section Cast‑In - Set in concreteNew builds / where digging is fineGood permanence; use when slab not yet poured.

RSJ Cast‑In - Set in concreteHeavy‑duty perimeters, HGV yardsMaximum strength; specify depth & concrete grade.

Standard above‑ground heights: 560mm (low / forklift), 610mm (car park), 760mm (HGV), 1100mm (double height / high impact or pedestrian guard).

3. Safety Ends & Finishing Pieces

  • Fishtail End – curved, lower snag risk, common in public car parks.
  • Bullnose End – rounded closed end; neat visual stop.
  • Pedestrian Safety / Plastic‑capped Ends – high‑vis, injury‑reduction where people walk near barrier tips.

4. Corners & Transitions

  • Internal & external rigid corners to turn 90° neatly.
  • Custom angles, sweeps & step‑downs available — ask.

5. Fixings & Hardware (typical)

  • M16 Lap Bolts & Nuts – join overlapping beam ends.
  • M16 Post Bolts & Nuts – secure beam to post.
  • Anchor / Through Bolts – for bolt‑down posts (spec size to slab depth & load).
  • Spacers / Buffer Strips (optional) – reduce vibration, noise, paint rub.

Typical Applications

Car Parks – Perimeter runs, wall & column protection, pedestrian route segregation.
Warehouses & Distribution – Protect racking legs, dock doors, building steelwork, low walls from forklift strike.
Service Yards & Loading Bays – Define reversing limits; protect fuel tanks & plant.
Industrial Estates – Boundary protection & traffic channeling.
Public Access Sites – Retail parks, hospitals, schools (use fishtail / pedestrian‑safe ends).

How to Specify Your Armco Run (5 Quick Steps)

  1. Measure run lengths (centre‑to‑centre of posts or total wall distance).
  2. Note corners / changes in direction (internal vs external; angle).
  3. Pick post type & mount (bolt‑down vs cast‑in; Z vs RSJ).
  4. Choose height (see guide above).
  5. Select end treatment (fishtail, bullnose, pedestrian‑safe, connect to another system).

Shortcut: Email a sketch/photo with rough dims — we’ll spec the kit list for you.

FAQ – Armco Crash Barriers

How long is a standard Armco beam?

Total 3.5m; working / post‑centre length ~3.2m because of overlap.

Can Armco be installed indoors?

Yes. Common in warehouses to stop forklift damage to walls, racking & doors.

Do I need posts?

Yep. Beams mount to posts at set centres (most sites 3.2m; tighter for higher impact areas).

Bolt‑down or cast‑in posts – which is better?

Bolt‑down is faster on existing concrete. Cast‑in gives maximum pull‑out strength where you’re pouring new foundations.

What height should I order?

560mm low runs for forklifts; 610mm car parks; 760mm HGVs; 1100mm double‑height / high‑risk zones. Mix heights across site if needed.

Are barriers galvanised?

All standard Aremco Armco components are hot‑dip galvanised for corrosion resistance.

Can you colour them yellow?

Yes — powder coat over galvanised (spec RAL). Good for pedestrian routes & vehicle visibility.

Can you help design the layout?

Absolutely. Send dims / site plan and we’ll map out beam runs, post centres & parts list.
