How long should a steel barrier or bollard last?

The lifespan of a steel barrier or bollard largely depends on the materials used, the protective finish applied, and the environment it is installed in. When manufactured from high-quality mild steel and finished correctly, most steel barriers and bollards are designed to last many years—often 10 to 20+ years or more.

One of the most important factors is the finish:

Environmental conditions also play a big role. Installations in coastal areas, high-traffic zones, or harsh industrial environments may experience more wear and corrosion over time, meaning occasional maintenance or recoating may be required to maximise lifespan.

Correct installation is equally important. Products that are properly installed—whether built-in or bolt-down—will perform better structurally and last longer, especially in high-impact or vehicle-prone areas.

With minimal maintenance, such as periodic inspections and touch-ups if required, a well-manufactured steel barrier or bollard can provide reliable, long-term protection and represent excellent value for money.
