What Is a Single Leaf Height Barrier?

A Single Leaf Height Barrier combines vehicle height restriction with the flexibility of an opening barrier.

Unlike a fixed height restriction barrier, the horizontal arm can be unlocked and swung open when unrestricted overhead access is required. This allows taller or authorised vehicles to enter the site without permanently removing the height restriction.

When closed, the barrier provides a clearly defined vehicle clearance at the entrance. When required, the single arm pivots horizontally away from the opening to provide unrestricted overhead access.

This makes a single leaf opening height barrier particularly useful for sites where taller vehicles occasionally require access.

How Does a Single Leaf Height Barrier Work?

The horizontal barrier arm is hinged from one upright and swings horizontally to open the entrance.

When closed, the opposite end of the arm is secured at the receiving post.

Where required, additional posts can be supplied so that the barrier arm can also be secured in the open position.

This provides a practical way to maintain a height restriction during normal operation while allowing controlled access when necessary.

Technical Specifications

Uprights

The main barrier uprights are manufactured from:

120mm × 120mm × 5mm SHS mild steel

The uprights are root-fixed as standard and installed into suitable concrete foundations.

Opening Arm / Top Rail

The opening barrier arm is manufactured from:

80mm × 80mm × 3mm SHS mild steel

The arm pivots horizontally from the hinge post, allowing the entrance to be opened when required.

Standard Spans

Single leaf barriers are available in:

  • 3 metres
  • 4 metres
  • 5 metres
  • 6 metres

If your entrance requires a non-standard dimension, please contact us to discuss the available options.

Height Options

The barrier can be manufactured to suit the required vehicle clearance.

Common heights include:

  • 2.0m
  • 2.1m
  • 2.2m

Bespoke heights are also available where required.

The required clearance height should always be checked carefully before ordering.

Standard Finish – Galvanised & Yellow Powder Coated

Our Single Leaf Height Barriers are hot-dip galvanised and then powder coated Yellow RAL 1021 as standard.

The galvanised coating provides corrosion protection to the steel, while the Yellow RAL 1021 powder-coated finish provides a highly visible final appearance.

This two-stage finish makes the barrier particularly suitable for outdoor vehicle access points where both corrosion protection and visibility are important.

If Yellow RAL 1021 is not suitable for your site, alternative RAL colours may be available on request.

Please tell us your required colour when requesting your quotation.

How Do I Measure for a Single Leaf Height Barrier?

When requesting a quotation, the opening width should be measured:

Inside of post to inside of post.

For example, if you require a clear opening of 5 metres, tell us that you require 5m between the posts.

We will also need to know:

  • Required clear opening width
  • Required vehicle clearance height
  • Whether the barrier needs to be secured in the open position
  • Whether an alternative RAL colour is required
  • Delivery postcode
  • Whether installation is required

If you're unsure about your measurements, send us a simple drawing, sketch or site photographs and our team can help establish the required specification.

Height Restriction Sign

A reflective maximum height sign can be fitted to the barrier to clearly display the permitted vehicle clearance.

Our standard height restriction signs are manufactured from 2mm aluminium composite with RA1 reflective material and can display the height restriction in both metres and feet.

The displayed restriction should always be checked carefully against the required vehicle clearance before manufacture.

If you require a particular height marking, please tell us when requesting your quotation.

Locking the Barrier

The opening arm can be secured in the closed position, allowing the site operator to control when the barrier can be opened.

For locations where the barrier needs to remain open for periods of time, additional open-position locking posts can be supplied.

These allow the arm to be secured when open rather than being left unsecured.

Please tell us how you intend to operate the barrier when requesting your quotation so that we can advise on the appropriate arrangement.

Can the Barrier Arm Be Lifted Off the Hinges?

Our opening height barriers use a robust hinge arrangement that Aremco has used for many years.

When the barrier is locked, removing the arm from the hinges without suitable lifting equipment is extremely difficult.

For sites where additional protection against the arm being lifted from the hinges is required, we can apply a small weld to the hinge pins.

This prevents the arm from simply being lifted from the hinges. If the barrier arm subsequently needs to be removed or replaced, the weld can be ground away.

Please request this option before manufacture if required.

Where Are Single Leaf Height Barriers Used?

Single leaf opening height barriers are suitable for sites where vehicle height normally needs to be restricted but occasional unrestricted overhead access is still required.

Typical applications include:

  • Car parks
  • Industrial estates
  • Business parks
  • Schools and colleges
  • Warehouses
  • Distribution centres
  • Retail parks
  • Service yards
  • Commercial premises
  • Private roads and entrances
  • Public sector sites

For entrances that do not require the barrier to open, a Fixed Height Restriction Barrier may be more appropriate.

For wider entrances where a single opening arm is unsuitable, a Double Leaf Opening Height Restriction Barrier may provide a better solution.

Installation Guidance

Correct installation is important to ensure that the barrier is properly aligned and operates correctly.

The root-fixed uprights should be installed into suitable concrete foundations appropriate for the ground conditions and barrier specification.

Before excavation begins, always check for underground services including electrical cables, water pipes, gas services and drainage.

Care should be taken to ensure that the uprights are correctly positioned, level and aligned so that the opening arm meets the receiving post correctly.

Foundation requirements can vary according to ground conditions and the dimensions of the barrier.

If you're unsure about the installation requirements for your site, please contact us before installation begins.

Professional Installation Available

Professional installation can be arranged through our independent installer.

If you would like installation included within your quotation, please provide:

  • Site postcode
  • Required barrier width
  • Required clearance height
  • Photographs or drawings where available

We can then include the installation requirement when preparing your quotation.

Delivery & Offloading

Single Leaf Height Barriers are large fabricated steel products and customers must ensure that suitable offloading facilities and/or sufficient personnel are available when the delivery arrives.

Due to the dimensions of the barrier components, a standard tail-lift cannot normally be used.

If you anticipate any problems with offloading, please contact us as soon as possible and no later than the day before delivery is due. This gives us the opportunity to discuss the available options before the goods are sent out for delivery.

If we are not notified until the day of delivery, the goods will already be with the carrier. If delivery cannot then be completed because suitable offloading arrangements are unavailable, an additional re-delivery charge will apply.

Alternative delivery arrangements, including driver assistance or a specialist vehicle, may be available at additional cost where required.

Some remote postcodes and locations may also incur additional carriage charges.

Please see our Shipping & Delivery Policy for full delivery information.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Single Leaf Height Barrier?

A Single Leaf Height Barrier is an opening height restriction barrier with one horizontal arm that pivots from a hinge post.

It allows vehicle height to be restricted during normal operation while still providing the ability to open the barrier when taller or authorised vehicles require access.

What widths are available?

Our standard Single Leaf Height Barriers are available in 3m, 4m, 5m and 6m spans.

Bespoke dimensions may also be available depending on the required specification.

How do I measure for a Single Leaf Height Barrier?

Measure the required clear opening from inside of post to inside of post.

You should also provide the required vehicle clearance height.

If you're unsure, send us a sketch, drawing or photographs and we'll help establish the required specification.

What heights are available?

Common vehicle clearance heights include 2.0m, 2.1m and 2.2m.

Bespoke heights can also be manufactured where required.

Please check the required clearance carefully before ordering.

What finish is the Single Leaf Height Barrier supplied in?
